Adjustment of status from Chicago
We filed our I-485 in mid-September, 2017. We received our interview letter in early July, 2018. Our interview was at the USCIS office on Congress Parkway in downtown Chicago early August, 2018. We arrived about 30 minutes early. The receptionist took our interview notice, scanned the computer screen, gave us a token number and asked us to wait near Door 2. The waiting area was a big hall with lots of chairs. On either end of the hall there were doors for entering the interview area. Most people were asked to sit near Door 1 at the other end of the hall. We waited near Door 2 beyond our appointment time. Since there was nobody near Door 2 except us, I got a bit worried. I went back and asked the receptionist again. By now there was a new receptionist and she asked us to just wait near Door 1! We moved over to the other end of the hall.

About 15 minutes later Door 2 opened and a lady called our token number! We ran back to the other end of the hall to enter the interview area. The interviewing officer (a lady) took our oath and asked me to produce my passport and driver's license. My spouse produced his passport upon which she commented "You came all the way from (Tropical Island Country)?" She asked how he was coping with Chicago winter! She then asked him a slew of Yes/No questions (Were you ever denied visa to the USA, have you engaged in prostitution, etc.). She then took his thumb impressions (both hands) and his picture using a camera on her table. She asked me if I met him in his country. She then asked us about common assets, accounts and documents. She did not take all of our documents. Even as she was filing away the documents, she said that my spouse was approved and that he should expect his residency card in about a week. There was email notification from USCIS about 5 hours later to the same effect.

I asked "Is that it?". She said yes and escorted us back to the hall. The whole interview process took about 5 minutes.

For additional reference, we are a gay couple with noticeable age difference between us. None of that seemed to matter to the interviewing officer.
