Dallas - Passed The Interview
Sharing my experience for folks still in the process.
Been a green card holder since March of 2006 but finally got around to apply for citizenship in July 2017.
Applied: July (early) 2017
Fingerprints: July 27th, 2017
Interview notice received: Sept (early) 2018
Interview scheduled: Oct 3rd 2018
Waiting room was full of people, but they called my named exactly on time, which was schedule for 9AM. I arrived at 8:45. I went through security and was told to go upstairs. The waiting period was less than 15 minutes.
Once the officer (nice young guy) called my name at 9AM, it took him 40 minutes to complete the interview. At 9:40, I was in my car and going back to work.
First he swore me in and than started my interview. He ask me 6 question, which I answered correctly. Than he made me read & write a simple sentence.
Then I asked the office I want to amend (change) the application since I have (i) moved, (ii) traveled outside of the country for less than 6 months, (iii) wrongly stated that I have not committed a crime, which I did in 2008.
He said, its not a problem and we will get to that later. He started off with my application and asked me if everything I filled out was accurate and if not than we can review/change to reflect the correct answer.
There was a problem with my name on my birth certificate (dam Indians), my birth certificate was missing my last name and it had a extra 'a' in my first name. The birth certificate didn't match with my passport, Green Card or SSN card. He said it was confusing and disregard my birth certificate. He looked at my old Indian passport and my recent Indian passport and said this should work and will go with the name on your passport.
He asked me if my recent trip outside of US was longer than 6 months, to which I said NO, and he said "ok, thats all it matters" and didn't go about changing it in my application.
I told him about my crime (which I didn't show in my initial N400 application), he asked me when & where it happened. I told him the city and said I was 18 year old, and I stole a USB cable. He laughed and said "being young makes you do stupid things" but that was 12 years ago and the case is dismissed. "As long as there are no current case open, it should be fine". You served your 8 hours community service and probation. He took my court disposition and make the necessary changes to my application. He asked me about speeding tickets and I said YES I have received 5+ speeding tickets.
After, he asked me more question about my application and made me sign couple of documents.
At the end, he said you have passed the interview and I will recommend you for an Oat ceremony.
YAY!!
My advice to you guys: Be cool, they are nice people. Be honest because they have all the records.
BRING A COPY OF YOUR APPLICATION WITH YOU because they review the application with you, its nice to have it in front of you for reference purposes.
