Welcome to America!;)
Greetings to all. I would like to share my personal experience from being out of status to officially being a resident of United States.

I came to United States 2013 with j1 visa. After that , was able to get 3 more visas extended that served me for 3 years but still I overstayed.

I met my husband and dated for a little over a year and got married. Nothing fancy during our big day, we only had one witness ; my sister. Three months later we submitted the application and petition with a lawyer. Gathering the necessary documents were more head banging than getting married.

Timeline:
December 11 ,2017 - Submission of the application/petition
December 18, 2017 - Receipt
December 28, 2017 - Biometrics Notice
January 8,2018 - Biometrics
February 2018 - Applied for work authorization ( Lawyer didn’t include in the package; you should apply for this )
May 24, 2018 - Work permit Approved
May 30, 2018 - Card received
September 11, 2018 - Interview was scheduled
October 16,2018 - Interview (Sacramento,Ca)
October 19, 2018- Approval Notice by mail and Card has been mailed online update

The interview itself was very easy and if it’s a real marriage it shouldn’t be difficult. Questions were basic , interview lasted for 9 mins and approved on the spot. I brought 3 binders with us as supporting documents yet he did even bother asking for it.It was clearly explained to us why I am getting conditional green card and how to renew it in the future and the citizenship.

I was nervous and prepared to answer the toughest possible question (working unauthorized) but it wasn’t brought up. Better over prepared than under prepared.
Having a lawyer makes it easier but that doesn’t mean you can’t diy it. Read the instructions carefully and do a lot of research and you’ll be good. Because your marriage is real you wouldn’t put effort in compiling the necessary documents then you’re wrong, they may not bother asking for it but the confidence of having it lifts you up. Get your stuff right and store up your patience for this journey.

Cheers 🥂

Welcome to America :) 🇺🇸God bless.
