Interview Experience:
Appointment was at 10:15 am at the Tampa Field Office. We arrived and checked in with our lawyer at 10:00 am. Waited about 20-30 minutes, not sure exactly but it was not very long.
Officer took us to her office and we took the oath. She started with taking our IDs and Passports. She did not examine them closely (did not even open mine). Started asking my wife (petitioner) the application questions "name, address, DOB, etc." She asked to see her original BC. My wife lives in Orlando for school, so she asked why we live in different addresses, and my wife answered accordingly. She asked her for my address, which my wife could not remember. This was where my wife got super nervous and shaky. The officer then went through I-485 questions with me (almost all of them).
Then we came to the conversation. She asked my wife how and when we met. She asked me "Why her?" and our lawyer had warned us before the interview that this question has started coming up more. The answer is NOT "She's pretty/beautiful", it needs to be more meaningful. I answered accordingly and she asked my wife "why him?" She asked us if we had a traditional Indian (my origin) wedding. We said we had a traditional american wedding here and we will travel to india later this year to have the traditional indian wedding. Then she asked for proof of joint ownership since we don't live together, so our lawyer handed her everything. She then looked at the two photo albums we had, took several photos for her records. (Also told my wife to wear a Saree for the indian ceremony lol). She did not look at marriage certificate, any of my visas, I-20s, EAD, BC, etc.
Now here's the weird part. After that, she told me their system was down so she could not take my fingerprint or photo. She asked that I come back Friday, Feb 8th, to do all of that. She put a note on my notice and told me to bring this so they let me in. We left a little bummed because she did not tell us her approval recommendation or anything as nothing was in the system officially. However around 1:15 that afternoon, I get a call from her saying if I can make it back by 2:00 that day, she could take my fingerprint and photo. So I hauled back, made it by 1:55. Security could not reach her (I left my notice at home), however they got someone else to come get me to take my fingerprints and photo.
Then this morning I wake up to my I-765 and I-131 case changed to "Case closed benefit received by other means". My heart started pumping, 5 minutes later I-485 changed to "New Card is being produced"
We are ecstatic, our officer was very stiff so we did not know what to think of the interview. However, we are blessed and made it through it. It is not as daunting as you think, when you telling the truth and have a genuine relationship, there is nothing to fear. The officers know right away when you are making up a story.
If you have any questions, please do ask. Sorry for the long post :)
