Employment-based GC Interview at San Jose Field Office
My GC Timeline
10/16/18: I-485 was sent (EB2-NIW)
11/28/18: Fingerprint at San Francisco
04/23/19: EAD/AP combo card was received
6/20/19: Interview was scheduled
7/24/19: Interview at USCIS San Jose field office

We arrived at 8:45am, half an hour before the appointment at 9:15am. We went through security and got a ticket with a number after checking in. We waited until 9:45am to be called by our IO and followed him to his office and sat down.
Regular process was followed (checked ID, took photo, finger print and oath). IO asked whether we hired an immigration attorney for I-485 and what was the reason for EB1A petition withdrawal.
The IO first went through visa history carefully and made notes for himself. He appreciated the visa timeline we made and submitted to him during the interview. (We had all kinds of visas, multiple F1, F2, J1, H1b, and O1 during last 10 years. Even we ourselves got confused.)
Then IO started to confirm or update info on I-485 page by page and went through all questions.
He had to double check whether benefit revived from California's Paid Family Leave Program is considered as "public assistance".
The IO made notes on I-485 wherever new info with evidence was submitted and double checked with us before we signed on the form.
The whole interview lasted about 2 hours. (IO let us out in the middle of interview for a 10-min break)
IO was friendly and professional and focused on checking whether there's enough evidence provided for each claim/answer.
We did not get approval on the spot. The IO told us that the application package has to be reviewed to make sure all necessary documents are submitted to support the application. Once the application is deemed approvable, availability of Green Card number will be checked. If available, Green Card will be issued. Otherwise, our application will be sent back to NBC with a "approvable" note to wait for new numbers released in next FY in Oct.

Our recommendations are:
- Prepare your own visa timeline for IO
- Examine whether every single claim in I-485 has appropriate evidence(s) to support.
(Although it seems like IO's job, if any evidence is missing, applicant is ultimately responsible for it.)

Good luck with your application! Hope you all get your GC in hand soon!
