Interview Experience at Mumbai Consulate
Had my H1B visa interview at the Mumbai Consulate on August 19 at 8.30 am.
This was an H1 extension (same employer, FTE), first H1 stamping after transitioning from F1.
Officer asked me for my approved I-797 and passport. Asked for my I-20 to verify sevis stuff. After about 7-10 mins of follow up questions, he said everything looks good, visa is approved and I should expect my passport back in 3-5 business days. No questions about employer, salary, job description surprisingly.
Here's the timeline:
August 10: Biometrics (15 minutes)
August 14: Case Created
August 19: Consulate Interview (30 minute wait, security, initial processing | 30 minute wait to get to a counter | 10 minutes for interview)
August 19: Case Updated (Post Interview)
August 20: Administrative Processing (Case Updated around 3-4 pm IST)
August 21: Administrative Processing (Case Updated around 1-2 pm IST)
August 22: Issued (Case Updated around 9.30- 10.30 am IST)
August 22: Passport ready for pick-up (around 2.15 pm IST)
August 22: Passport picked up from collection facility (Around 4 pm IST)
Be prepared with all your documents. I was asked for a really old I-20 and fortunately I had it with me. Stay as calm as possible and remember that the officer is only trying to do his/her job. If he/she's asking you several follow-up questions, answer them calmly and patiently. Everything will workout as long as you're honest and upfront about your application.
