I-944
Hi,

Because of the pandemic I’m currently receiving cash assistance and food stamps (myself and child). My wife is undocumented so she doesn’t qualify to receive any benefits anyway. I need to petition for my spouse (AOS) this year. On the I-944 there’s a question, “Does any of the income from your or your household members' federal tax return(s) come from public benefits as listed in the Instructions?”
What does this question mean? Public benefits/snap are not taxed, this question doesn’t make any sense to me.

Moreover, according to USCIS “DHS will also not attribute receipt of a public benefit by one or more members of the applicant’s household to the applicant unless the applicant is also a listed beneficiary of the public benefit.” Does this mean that I, the petitioner and sponsor don’t have to report any public benefits including food stamps? I don’t see any question on any application (I-864, I-944, I-485, I-130) that asks for this information petitioner/sponsor/household member or spouse has received or receives public benefits. Unless they start asking us questions regarding public benefits during our green card interview. Thank you so much!
