My perspective on CKGS changed after going there in person. They are way different than on phone. They can get the most accurate response from consulate if you go there in person.
Consulate has some issues currently with PIO cards not available to print and such. I went there(CKGS) with my infant and tried withdrawing my passport and applying for an emergency/urgent VISA. That is when the manager at CKGS made the consulate deliver an immediate response on the current status. I even got my PIO and Passport same day (pickup) due to the final stages of my application maybe. Applied 10/24.
Here are some things I learned :
Never trust the lower of the estimates. 4~6 weeks can be 6 weeks or more sometimes. Plan accordingly.
SFO CKGS hands out 60 emergency/urgent tickets early in the morning (0900 AM) but lines start as early as 0430AM so 60 tickets are not available at 0900 AM if you be there at 0900 AM. Death emergency requests can be handled out still and don't count towards the 60 count.
There is some motor inn near by consulate which is about $70 per night with parking and breakfast. Great for those travelling for Consulate general/CKGS affairs.
CKGS is very efficient when you go there in person. Indian consulate, not sure but phone experience ranges from good to worst. Call consulate 2-4pm.
