OCI Card

Here is our experience with CKGS- Chicago location. Applied for OCI cards for the entire family in late June 2015. They processed everything quite promptly and asked for our passports for matchup in late August. Unfortunately, we were traveling abroad in late September and I read online about some people's passports being held up for 1-2 months during the match-up process. We finally submitted the original passports in early October, and received our passports and OCI cards on the 24th of October. So a total of 4 months- 1 month of which was my own delay.
The website could improve- there seem to be more than 1 way of documentation, but there is only 1 right way- and I must have called the CKGS call center at least 10 times during this 4 month period- having wait times anywhere from a couple of min to 20+ minutes. I think I might have a bit of PTSD from automated telephone music tune that just keeps going on and on. The website also doesn't make clear regarding the courier payments- and I ended up paying the return courier fees again. Hopefully, my request for reimbursement of that money will be honored. I did wait to receive these cards before booking my tickets to India, and even though we started the process so early for Dec/Jan trip- we still could only book the flight in late Oct. So planning the OCI well in advance is critical.
Overall, things could have gone a lot worse, and I am grateful it all went smoothly. Until the next renewal.
