Below is the recent experience for OCI applied for my daughter.
Would suggest everyone to consider minimum of 4 months time period to book you flight tickets, inorder to avoid rescheduling chargers.

What Happened when:

Your application has been received and is under process in CKGS. Please continue tracking your application status online. Your tracking id is {Tracking_Id}
11/24/2015
We have received your payment and we are verifying the same. If the payment made is complete, you will receive a payment receipt shortly. If there is any further discrepancy, you will receive an update.
12/11/2015
Your application has been processed at the CKGS Application Centre and is in transit to the Indian Embassy/Consulate for decision making.
03/04/2016
Your Passport has been received at CKGS for Match-Up and is currently being packaged for onward submission to the Embassy / Consulate.
Your printed OCI Card is ready for match-up with your US Passport / Foreign Passport. Please complete the OCI match-up process and refer to the email sent to you from CKGS with further details.

Your Passport is 'In Transit' to the Embassy / Consulate for Match-Up.
Your US / Foreign Passport has been ‘Processed’ at the CKGS Application Centre and ‘Submitted’ to the Indian Embassy / Consulate for Match Up.

This is to inform you that your OCI Card has been ‘Printed’ and is ‘Dispatched’ to the Indian Embassy / Consulate in USA.

Your application with your Passport and OCI Card has 'Returned' to the CKGS application Centre and is being 'Sorted' and will be ready for shipment through FedEx

To track the progress of your shipment, log on to ww2.fedex.com/us and enter your AWB Number.

Passport and OCI card inhand. If you have paid through CKGS, it will be Fedex standard overnight and you will receive in one day.

Indian Webiste Tracking status:
Documents Printing Status PROCESSED On 19FEB2016
Dispatched From MOIA (OCI ) from NEW DELHI On 22FEB2016
Document received At WASHINGTON DC On 29FEB2016

It will take 42 working days to get processed at New Delhi inorder to verify your document and send back the OCI printed card.

I had to follow up with Indian embassy inorder speed up the match process and also i have sent the passport before the status was updated on CKGS.
You can look at Indian website status and if it says received at DC then you can send the document, if its urgent, else you can wait for one or 2 days for receivng email.
