  • Adjustment of Status (F1 student married to US Citizen.

Hi y'all, this website has been a lot of help since I started applying for my F1 student visa back in 2014. Now I need help with my AOS application as I am totally new to these rules and regulations. So I am an international student here in the US, who just got married recently to my girlfriend of 2.5 years and I want to apply for my AOS. I have no OPT neither CPT so in short I don't have any income. I have researched a lot on this subject but would like to learn more from some real experiences and help myself. My wife is a US Citizen who is also a full time student. Now that I got married, I have no idea what should be the next step? Should I hire an attorney or it is ok to process everything on my own? I have not many documents that proves our relationship of 2.5 years. I know few docs that prove my relationship, such as joint account but after researching I am confuse that what bank would be the best for my account? What forms do I need to fill out? If there is anybody who shares my experience and want to share how did it go and the process, I will greatly appreciate it. Please help!!!

Since neither of you have income, you will need to find a joint sponsor for the Affidavit of Support.

You do not need a lawyer unless you really hate filling out forms. A lawyer would basically just be filling out forms from the information you give them anyway.

You can start a joint account in any bank. Start now and by the time of the interview you will have a longer history. Add each other on auto insurance, health insurance, life insurance, etc. if you have them. Add each other as beneficiaries on variable accounts when possible.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

My in laws are going to sponsor us. Secondly I don't know what bank is the best to open a joint account in. I am already on their family auto insurance, but will it be ok if I add my name under their health and life insurance?
