Adjustment of Status with expire days H1B

Hi all, I just filed for Adjustment of Status for my wife within 60 days after her H1B visa expired. She already completed her biometric appointment. We received a request for more information from USCIS asking for an unexpired H1B visa or I-94. I believe in one of the forms included in the filing packet we filled out the expiration date for the H1B. My wife was let go of job unexpectedly and it took us some time to get our finances and paperwork together as well as moving out of our apartment. What is the appropriate response to USCIS request? Include the expired H1B with a letter of explanation/apology?

Are you a US citizen? If so she only needs to prove lawful admission ie most recent I-94
