My one year work permit will expire in October so does my DL. Still no date for green card interview.
How long before it expires can I apply for an extension so I can renew my DL.

You should apply for renewal now. You can apply until 180 days before expiration date. It seems to be taking much longer to get EAD now so you need to apply ASAP.

Assuming your previous EAD was under the same category as you intend to file with, it will be automatically extended 180 days so long as USCIS recieves it before your current EAD expires. See below:
