  • Part time student while waiting for approval?

    Hello everyone,

I was wondering if I can be a part time student (take course less than 12 credit, possibly one class) while waiting for I-485 approval. I'm on F-1 visa. We are filling our papers on January.

Taking too few credits could cause you to fall out of F1 status, but yes, you can stay in the US for as long as your I-485 is pending regardless of whether you go out of status or not.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

My University told me that part-time was not an option, so I had to cancel my I-20 because I couldn't afford international tuition ( I had a sponsor before got married).

You would cancel I-20, but most universities still let you attend without being an F-1 student, if you have I-485 pending.
