  • Question Regarding yes/no answer

Thank you so much for all your questions and responses, they really help!
Well, I feel really stupid right now.....
I was excited to soon start the process until I read the I 485 form today.
One of the questions in the back asks if you ever lied about US citizenship, meaning you said you were a US citizen even though you?re not.
Well after reading for hours about how this is very serious and can make you deportable, without ever getting the green card and US citizenship.
When I came here I was young, blind sided by love, stupid, so I applied at a college and I?m pretty certain 100% I put down that I?m a US citizen. I wish I knew that sooner, I didn?t think anything of it, until now. I?m totally broken hearted.
I was just wondering if there?s anybody else here who did this or has experience with it, I don?t want mean comments, just other people?s experiences
This was almost 10 years ago, I?m not sure how long a college keeps records of the application, I will call them in the morning. Thank you in advance

did you lie to get thousand of dollars of benefit or some financial benefit?

If you did it to receive any sort of financial benefit, I would (personally) get an opinion from a lawyer. I would also be stressing out over so stupid like this.

Thank you for your response! No, I only checked that box because there were only US citizen and LPR (you had to promise A number) options. And all I wanted was to get accepted at the community college. I never applied for any benefit other than being able to take classes, never applied for financial aid or other governmental assistance. Just a stupid college application that might cost me my future. I still can?t believe this! 20 years old and stupid , so stupid!

We all make mistakes. But if this didn't bring any financial benefit ( I had friends lie to get financial benefit which is why i was asking). Call the school and ask whether you would have gotten accepted if you had chosen either of the two options. If they say that it was likely you would have gotten accepted if you had chosen the other option then this can technically be consider a human error. But it's always good to be upfront when it comes to the interview so my personal advice and i know others might have a different view here, bring it up in the interview to clarify this situation. That way they can see your honesty, but like i said call the school. Also - if you had chosen that you were a citizen, wouldn't the school ask for proof that you were? did you submit false documents to do this? if so, that's another scenario.

Thank you again! I just looked at the I 485 firm that expired in 2015 and it is only 6 pages long and now it?s like 18?!?!?!?
And I did not see this question in the older form, so that?s why I never thought of it until today when I read the new form.
And you know what?s really weird too? I could swear I looked up my school stuff a couple years ago and I saw on my graduation transcript or somewhere ?non us citizen? , now I can?t find it anymore. But I can remember I said to myself, hm, this is weird lol why would they write non us ..... no, I have her all my foreign documents and foreign translated high school transcript. I?m also thinking it was a written application on paper, so thought maybe I could make it seem like human error. Ohhhhhh thank you so much for responding! Oh I do have a valid US SSN from a previous visa
What happened to your friends if you don?t mind me asking? So do you think I could be
?Lucky? because I didn?t get any financial benefits? I still believe I?m in big trouble because I think I said I was US citizen

As long As you didn't receive any government benefit or any sort of benefit and didn't submit any false documents to get into college then i wouldn't stress about it. My friends were not in the same situation as you, just slightly different topic. I don't know much and to what extend you mistakenly filled the application so i can only advise on what i read here.

I understand! I?m just trying to figure out that not so nice sounding law sentence
That if you ever claimed to be US citizen , you have no chance to become legal
Like does that apply in each and every case, or only when there is a benefit to get from

I see you?re applying for your GC! Glad you got the interview notice
Good luck to you! Thank you again

Isn't lying in another country to get education equivalent to receiving a benefit? It is in my book, and in my country

There should be a seperate field office for this sh*t so that we can get on with playing by the rules

Yeah, understood. That?s why I was trying to get an understanding if he had intentionally lied to get benefits or whether it was a simple human error.

You should contact the school to see if they can send you a copy of your application and transcript to be 100% sure what information you submitted on the application.
