L1 to H1 transfer

My friend changed L1 to H1. Does L1 status expire soon after H1 is approved? With L2 if the dependent had an EAD and now that status is changed to H4. Is it possible to work with this EAD or is it illegal. Do they have to cancel EAD or anything like that?

EAD invalid

If you are on H-4, there is no way to use the EAD. While you don't have to cancel that, but don't get paid using that! Your last pay should be the last day of L-2.
