  • 485 Interview Question

    Hello,

My girlfriend just became a US citizen. She and two other family members (who are all citizens) are sponsoring her parents for a GC. We just received a letter saying an interview has been scheduled for August 4.

The problem is, my girlfriend and I have had a vacation scheduled for months for that week, with $2,000 in airfare and other expenses committed. Her parents, and the other two sponsors can certainly make the interview date, but my girlfriend can't unless we cancel this trip.

Question: is it okay if she is not there at the interview but the other two sponsors are? Is it possible to change the date of the interview (like with Jury Duty) without penalty? We will cancel the trip if we have to, but I'd like to exhaust all other possibilities first.

    Thank you,

    -Matt

It is possible to reschedule the interview... but you never know how long it will take before they get another date... it could be 6 months.

I would advise you to re-schedule the trip. $2,000 in airfares = $300 in fees to change tickets.

      i-485 appointment rescheduling

i had the same problem. my interview date was on 7/3/08.

i made an infopass appt at the local uscis office and
      went and explained my situation.
they said i had to write a letter asking to reschedule my interview date,
which i did in the office that day. my tickets i purchased were not able
to be changed or refunded, so i gave them a copy of my itinerary along with the letter.

we just got a notice of action today, 7/8/08, saying they cancelled the interview on the date we were suppose to have it due to unforseen circumstances and they will let us know when the rescheduled interview would be.

The guy at the uscis office said they usually schedule the interviews 2 months in advance.
i only did this due to the fact my tickets were purchased in a way to where they were not able to be changed or refunded. I didnt expect the interview to be that quickly. i sent the i485 in february and had to send a translation which they received in april. so between april - july is all it took. I asked the guy also why it was so fast and he said they want to get people processed and finished so they can go on with their lives instead of dealing with the uscis for so long.
