  • Can I use OPT social security card to apply for jobs while waiting for the c9 one?

    Hi everyone,
So as the tittle says. I got my social security card under OPT 3 years ago and still have it now. With this c9 I-765, I requested a new SS card and according to USCIS, it should come in 2 weeks after receiving EAD. My question is, since my ss number stays the same, can I use my OPT ss card to apply for jobs or do I have to wait for the new one? Both cards have my maiden name, if that matters.
    Thank you,
AOS from F1, spouse of USC - Seattle, WA

If your EAD will have the same name as the SS card that you have, the new one will be exactly the same just the date will change. You can use the old one. I will argue, even if the name is different (married name) you can still apply for jobs with old SS card and maybe you will need the marriage document just to show that you are the same person. Just a hunch, not legal advice.

Yeah, it's kinda confusing for people with different names on the card, I imagine background check would take longer. Anyway thank you so much, it's good to know I can use my old card since it has the exact same name as the new one will (if anything, maybe this time my middle name will be spelt out instead of just initialed like on my old one).
