Depends where you are living. In Massachusetts you can apply for a license to carry or a firearms ID card once you get your green card. You should Google your home state and see what their requirements are.

You need the greencard. Its a FEDERAL requirement as a resident alien - which you will be when you have a greencard. Without it - regardless of state, you cannot legally purchase a firearm.
As for local state laws, you will likely be required to do a handgun safety course first (NY State as an example requires this) prior to the purchase of a handgun, for hunting rifles and shotguns it may not be required.

Always check the state laws because every state has different set of laws regarding gun ownership. And you’ll have to wait till you get a green card.
