What is my legal status!?

This issue puzzles me.

I am applying for renewal of my employment authorization document (EAD / I-765) as I await an interview for a greencard (family based).

I do not know what to write on item 25 - which asks what is my current legal status.

I entered the US on a J-1 visa (which is now expired). I applied for change of status through marriage with a citizen spouse.

My lawyer (now almost retired) says to just put J-1 on the box. That was my legal status on arrival to
the US, but is not my current legal status

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

We wrote: Pending I-485, I read others do too. No problems with renewals.
