  • Name discrepancy b/w passport and birth certificate (marriage-based GC)

I'm applying for a marriage-based green card. I currently work in the US on an H1B visa. I understand that as part of my application, I need to submit copies of both my passport and birth certificate.

I have my full name listed on my passport (e.g., Clare Johnson) but I have my abbreviated name on my birth certificate (e.g., J. Clare). All other documentation is consistent with my passport. Do I need to provide an affidavit or some secondary documentation or maybe a birth certificate from my country's embassy-based here in the US?

Also, should I include "J.Clare" as one of the other names I used since birth on the I-485?

Thanks in advance for your help!

My spouse's birth certificate just has her name and no initials. My attorney said it should be fine as long as father's name and mother's name are mentioned in the birth certificate.
you can check with your attorney as well.

You could provide an explanation that the country or region you belong to has a practice of having initials instead of surname.
