I got my drivers license last year through my EAD card with no issue. My license is expiring so I went to DMV in FL with my permanent resident card to renew. When they try to renew it comes up that I am a “non immigrant” and they are unable to renew it. They took copies of all my documents and emailed them to the document verification department.
Document verification said that all the documents were correct and valid but when they try to renew the license the same “non immigrant” message pops up.
The DMV is saying there is nothing they can do about this that I have to contact Immigration to fix this issue. I’ve contacted Immigration 6 different times about this same issue and all the representatives say the same thing “The DMV has to contact SAVE to resolve the issue because it’s an error between the DMV database and SAVE”
I’ve gone back to the DMV 5 times to try to explain to them what Immigration is telling me and the DMV tells me they have never heard of SAVE and that is not their job to do it. They tell me I have to contact immigration to have immigration update it. The last time I went in there the DMV Director was extremely rude, interrupting me every time I would try to talk and refused to help saying there is nothing they can do.
I have looked this up on the internet and it seems like this is a common issue. It seems like the DMV has to reach out to SAVE for secondary manual verification and open a SAVE case for us.
I live in a small rural town so I understand that the DMV probably never dealt with this situation before but it’s frustrating that they won’t even try to help or contact someone who can help.
I also wonder if maybe the issue is because I am renewing a license that was from the temporary EAD card? Maybe I have to apply for a brand new license with my green card?
When the SAVE office opens I’m going to try to call them to see if they can help but the Immigration representatives say I cannot have SAVE updated it has to be a registered agency (the DMV) to contact them. I also made an appointment with a different DMV in another city to see if they can help, this was difficult to find because many DMV’s only service people that live in the County the DMV is located.
Has anyone dealt with this? What should I do? Thank you
