  • Getting a re-entry permit after a 5 months absence?

    Hello there,

I just won the Green Card via the Diversity Lottery. My temporary visa on my passport is valid until March. I need to go to the US before the expiration date written on the visa, otherwise I will lose my Green Card. I would be OK about moving there permanently but there is a lot going on in my life right now and I need to get myself together before moving permanently.

So my idea is to get there before my visa expires and return to my country (France) until my permanent move, which could begin in August.

My question is, since I only got the Green Card now, and would probably not stay more than a month for my 'validation trip' before March, do I have to get a re-entry permit when I come back?
I read re-entry permits are only necessary for trips longer than a year, but since I just got the Green Card, I was wondering if I had to take one.

Thanks very much for your help!

If you're sure you'll only stay out for 5 months after activating your status, you don't need an REP. Border agents understand your situation. Many others do this. If you are unsure if you'll be able to return within 6 months, I'd advise you to apply for the REP just in case. It's not cheap, but it's worth keeping your status safe, no?
