  • I-551 stamp expired but no plastic card yet ... Now what ?

I just realized that my I-551 stamp in my passport which I got when I entered after doing CP in Mumbai has expired (Cannae believe that it is already one year). However, I have not got my plastic card yet ..

I recall reading that just because the stamp has expired it does NOT mean that my permanent residency status is in jeopardy. Can someone confirm this ?

When I go to the local INS office, will they just renew the stamp OR get me the physical card ?

Any ideas ? Thanks for your input.

Re: I-551 stamp expired but no plastic card yet

Your status as a Permanent Resident does not expire with the stamp. The stamp (or the card) is proof that you have this status, though. And you obviously need this proof if, for example, you are traveling abroad and want to come back.
When you go the the local INS, you will get another stamp. You should also file an I-90 to get them to produce a new card, since it may well be that the old card processing request vanished somewhere within INS.
The cards are produced in special printing facilities, so you won't get it at the local INS.

      Thanks!

Thanks JoeF. On checking with TSC, it seems that they have not yet mailed out the card. I will lookup the INS forms and send one out - although, I have half a mind not to send in the fees! - But, they will not consider the form complete without the fee {Sigh}.

      Thanks for your input!
