  • 2 yr green card ... then what?

i married my husband on a k-1 visa, we have followed lawyers advice and i now have my 2 yr green card which expires in aug 2006, what is the procedure to get the 10 yr green card and do i have to stay married until then.
my husband is holding the next green card over my head, to manipulate me, and i want to leave him, but i want to stay in the usa, i am not working now but i had a job and would like to work again or go to school. how soon can i become a citizen, and how soon can i get a divorce? do i need to stay with my husband until i am a citizen???

Looks like this marriage is give and take.

Good luck. Stick with him until you get citizenship.

When your conditional greencard expire in aug 2006, you have to send form I751 . Is best if is joint signed. Stay married until you get an answer on that form. Do not even apply for divorce before you get an answer. The statistics says that a very small # of people are asked for an interview. Even if you don't get an answer for that form before of the 3rd aniversary of your greencard, you are still eligeble to apply for citizenship. Your spouse is not required to came to your citizenship interview.
      Good luck to you.
      I am not an attorney.
