Re Entry Permit Help

Could you obtain a Visa for another country while traveling with the I-131? My husband is in need for a Reentry Permit. But we are planning on a volunteer program in china for 5 months and need a visa for that. Will he be able to obtain the visa or is that not allowed?

Sure he can. Does he have a passport too? He can get the visa in his passport or in his re-entry permit.

However, why does he want a re-entry permit for a 5 month trip?
