I currently work full time in an organization. Without registering a compnay in my name, can I consult and get paid for my consultation once I have my green card? Can they pay me on a 1099 even though I do not have my own firm or is it necessary that I ge paid only on a W2?

As per immigration is concerned -
As long as you work for your sponsor, you can do other work and get paid for it.
As per IRS - no idea.

Not problem at all.
You send invoices to the companies you consult for, and early next year they will send you a 1099.
For IRS, you need to file Schedule C declaring the 1099s. Be prepared to have a big tax bill, and the following year you probably will have to pay estimated taxes.
You definitely should either get one of the good tax programs, e.g., Turbo Tax Deluxe, or go to a CPA for tax preparation.
