Reentry Permit Renewal - Please help!!

Quick question: I am on an overseas assignment and hold a re-entry permit. I need to apply for the REP renewal, do I have to be physically there is US while applying for the extension or I can send the application package to a friend or a relative in US who can in-turn send the application as a certified mail to USCIS processing center? If latter is possible then I would come for the Biometrics only and not for applying.

Kindly advise!

Technically we are supposed to be within US for the entire period of application processing. Not sure if there can be deviations to apply in US embassies outside the US.

The Reentry Permit application (I-131) has to be submitted from the U.S., and you must be available for a Biometrics appointment, which usally follows USCIS receipt of the I-131 by 3-5 weeks.

Thanks RayB - so seems like one doesn't have to be in US for applying renewal? I can have my relative send in the application. For biometrics, ofcourse you have to be there!

You are supposed to be in the U.S. when applying for a Reentry Permit. Meeting the Biometrics requirement may be interpreted as being in the U.S.

Re-entry process

We had a family member mail re-entry application & info for my husband from States & once biometrics appt was made, he literally flew into US the day before the appt. & flew out again moments after appt.
