My husband's two year re-entry or travel document is about to expire yet he's still working abroad. Getting conflicting information on just renewing a re-entry/travel document let alone if possible, how long it's valid for a second time. Unfortunately, he'll probably need these extensions for @4 more years before he can permanently move to the US. Anyone out there already renew a re-entry permit for another 2 or more years? Would like to know if it's possible before sending in new application & paying yet more money to the US government. Thanks in advance for any info.

A Reentry Permit cannot be extended, but a new Reentry Permit, effective after the expiration of the old Permit, is allowable. Your dad will have to be in the U.S. when submitting and obtaining Biometrics for the new Reentry Permit. Other posters have reported the new I-131 and fee being submitted without the applicant being in the U.S., but arriving for Biometrics, then leaving. I think that may be a tad risky, because later auditing by USCIS of one's entry and exit stamps might find that requriement (submitting while in the U.S.) not having been met.

Application while outside US allowable?
Thanks for your input RayB. Do you know if it is possible to start reapplication for re entry from outside the US-perhaps through an embassy or consulate in your temporary place of residence? Or if not, can my husband come back into US on a tourist visa (ie; his British passport) for a week long holiday instead of with his green card & then begin the re-entry process while there? I understand he'll have to return for his biometrics appt. a month or two later & he'll have to fly back-there's just no way around that. We were wondering however if you're RE applying why you would need to RE do your biometrics?! An iris scan & fingerprints don't ever change. Also, would you know how many times you can reapply for the re entry permits? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide me.

The Reentry Permit must be applied for from within the U.S.
Why would your husband need to reenter the U.S. with a visitor visa if his Green Card is still valid (if he has not been out a year or more)?
Biometrics must be redone each time that one applies for a Reentry Permit.
