My re entry permit expired last july 2014. I wasn't able to check the expiration date because i was led to believed that I can stay outside the u.s for more than 1 year but not more than 2 years. By the time i checked my re entry permit it was already expired. Is there anyway possible for me to go back to the United States ?

Was your Reentry Permit a second or third such Permit?
You need to do the following to apply for"Returning Resident Status:"

I am very curious about why the Reentry Permit was only for one year.
Can you confirm that it was issued effective August 2013 and expired July 2014?
On the other hand, if your Green Card was set to expire in July 2014, that would have been the reason for the short-term Reentry Permit Was that the case?

Border inspectors sometimes advise multiple entry/exit immigrants to obtain Reentry Permit to show "intent to return," even if they are not out a year or longer.

The issuance date of my re entry permit was on july 2013 and the expiry date was on july 2014. I was confused i was issued by a 1 year re entry permit since i don't need a re entry permit to go outside the united states if i'll just stay for not more than 1 year right?

Then that is your answer. A Reentry Permit cannot be extended beyond the life of a Green Card. By staying outside of the U.S. when your Green Card expired, you are considered to have "abandoned" your Permanent Resident status.
Were you unaware that your Green Card would expire while you were out of the U.S.?

Well, since that was a false alarm, we're back to you being out of the U.S. too long, and your Green Card is at risk of being cancelled.
All I can recommend is that you reenter the U.S. and hope that your extended stay outside will be overlooked. Once past the Port of Entry, you have several options to overcome any USCIS problems about your being out of the U.S. too long.

When you return to the U.S., they might not let you in if they look closely at your passport for the entries/exit stamps
If they do let you in without saying anything, you're okay.
But they might let you in and schedule you for an Immigration Court adjudication hearing.
