  • Must I travel back to the USA immediately?

I need help on my re-entry permit. Please read my case as below:
I had been studying in Hamburg, Germany for 4 years before I became the permanent resident on December 19, 2014 .
My family currently live in California but I still live in the Germany because I would like to complete my bachelor study before coming back to the USA.
I applied for the re-entry permit on February 13, 2015 per Post when I was in Germany and travelled back to the USA for biometrics on March 24, 2015. Then, I came back to Germany for my study on March 31.
Because I was not physically in the USA to file the application, my application was denied and I received the denial decision on 6 August 2015.
Do I need to come back to the USA immediately to re-apply for the re-entry permit? I has been almost 6 months since the last date I departed the USA (March 31).
Or I can wait until the next semester break in February next year to get back to the USA (still within 1 year since the last departure March 31)?
According to the instruction from USCIS website, I just need the re-entry permit if I leave the USA for more than 1 year. But other sources like advise that I should have the reentry permit if I leave the USA for 6 months.
This information is very confusing and to be honest, it is extremely inconvenient for me to travel to the USA immediately because the new semester is about to start and I have just received a job offer for a working student position which I fought for 3 rounds to win.
Please also advise me on the documents I should prepare when coming back to get through the security gate easily. I have no bank account, no driving licence yet but all of my family's members live in the USA. I would be homeless if the officer denies my entry (
    Thanks a lot!

    Re-entry permit

I think if you have lived outside of the US continuously for 5 years or more, it is considered abandonment of citizenship. If you start a process here, and fly without approval from the USCIS or CBP, it is considered abandonment of application. If you are applying, you have to stay here until it is over. You should consult with a lawyer on this, first consultation session is free, so you should definitely try. In the mean time, search for information that relates to your situation.

    Hope that helps
