Renewing re-entry permit and subsequent permits

Hi, I have a re-entry permit that will expire on Dec 2016. I'm still in my 3rd year of studies which will require me to stay outside of the US for the next 2-3 years with minimal to no vacation since I'll be starting my clerkship next year followed by internship, both of which are included in my school's curriculum. I have a few questions regarding renewing and I hope someone can help me understand the process and the stuff that follows.

1. Can I renew my re-entry permit now (Dec 2015) even if I have used it for only a year? I've read that it can only be renewed within 90 days of expiration?

2. I've also read that subsequent re-entry permits will eventually have 1-year validity. If I renew this year, this will be my second re-entry permit. Would that have a 1-year validity as well or still 2-years?

Hi! I've sent my still valid reentry permit when I passed my new i-131 application. I've expedited the process and was able to have my biometrics within 3 weeks.
