  • Tax filing and travel after getting green card

    Hello,

My mother got green card last month (through family based). She is currently residing in home country and planning to move to US in next couple of months. I have couple of questions

    1. What is the time limit of entry into US once you are granted green card? is it 3 months, 6 months? It is not mentioned anywhere on the travel package the consular gave her.
    2. Will she need to file taxes by Apr 2016 (though she doesn't have social security number yet)?
    3. By what time, she will have to get health insurance? Are there any less expensive options for non working permanent residents?

    thanks

Did mom get an immigrant visa, rather than Green Card? The Green Card isn't normally issued till after arrival in the U.S.

She has to use the immigrant before the expiration date on the visa, varies from 1 to 6 months (based on her interview and anything delaying visa afterwards).

Your mom does not need to file income tax return if she had no income since arriving in the U.S.

the cost of insurance is going to depend on her age and the plan you choose. the plan options will also depend on her age.
This is my opinion not legal advice.
