We applied for the 751 within the required deadline, January of 2017, and green card expired in March 2017. Currently the website shows they are only processing 751's from August of ***2016***. I was told to use the acceptance letter you're supposed to receive as proof of your valid status. But i've had two experiences now where law enforcement don't recognize this. We were stopped once by a police who wouldn't let us go and was threatening to call INS because my wife's green card was invalid. He eventually let us go. Then last week we were visiting a national park near the border and on the way out there was a border patrol checkpoint, despite never leaving the country. We were detained for several hours since she was "illegal" and not valid. If you call USCIS they tell you you just need the letter and while technically it may be true it doesn't seem like actual law enforcement understands the situation. Is there anything elsle we can do to prevent this happening? Why don't they send you a temporary card? The paper receipt looks highly suspicious, anyone could forge one easily.
