  • Typo error on Green Card and potential consequences

    Hi guys,

I have recently received my GC and noticed that my first name was misspelt. I have been advised to file an I-90 form and it's quite frustrating to see that the whole process to get the correct GC is going to take up to a year.

The reason I want to get it corrected is that the immigration officer I talked to during my infopass appointment told me that it was necessary in order for me to be able to have the mention "DHS authorization only" removed from my SSN card.

Is it true? I've heard that many people never had it removed from their SSN card and they have never encountered any issues in regards to applying for a new job.

Are they going to ask for new fingerprints to be taken? Is it really necessary for me to file the I-90 for such a small typo error (one letter is not placed correctly) and go through all of this?

    Thanks for the input!

Unfortunately, the IRS is very meticulous when it comes to identity (name, date of birth, etc). You will run into problems later down when filing taxes or dealing with credit bureaus, banks, etc. America has identity theft problems that's why most if not all places ask for SSN to prove identity. It may not affect you now but when later down the road it will.

      Hey Kaylip,

Thanks for your reply. I guess I have no choice but to go through this process then...hopefully it will take less than a year to receive the corrected GC.

Very frustrating. I can't imagine how it would be. But if I really needed to work I would continue using the GC & SSN card I have until I get the replacement.
