  • free health insurance cover by the usa govt.

    hi:
on getting our GC, we will be arriving in usa on 25sep18 (age: 57,54,21)

    1. should we get our health insurance from our native country(india) *prior
to landing in usa, or,are we automatically health insured (on landing) by the
usa govt. on the basis of being PR
    2. if we were to be eventually given free insurance(health) by the usa govt., usually
after how many days would we get the insurance cover.
    3. if the usa govt. were to provide free health insurance, what would be the insured
amount & would that cover *every* health emergency cost.
    4. even if we were to get free coverage, is it advised to still get some extra/more
    coverage from private insurers.

usa doesn't have free insurance coverage. you have to get your own travel insurance, once in usa you can shop around to get insurance .

No Free Healthcare in the USA

You can shop around or purchase from your home country. You can contact Insubuy at 866-467-8289 (That's who we always used). Once you are settled and have jobs hopefully your employers will provide insurance. These plans available from Insubuy or other companies will only cover new sicknesses and injuries. You would not be able to see a doctor just for a general physical or blood tests. However, your employer insurance will provide coverage for everything.
Just my opinion... Use at your own risk...

Unfortunately there is no such thing as free healthcare in the US, once you have arrived in the US you will need to first find out if you qualify for a domestic health insurance plan if you're under 65 years of age, if you are over 65 you will need to wait 5 years before you are able to purchase medicare. as pryncissqueen said you should check into insubuy, I have heard from multiple sources that they are a fantastic group to seek assistance from when it comes to finding interim health insurance for green card holders. Best of Luck!
