  • NOT in country and NO income so Tax returns as 'Resident Alien' possible?

I got my GC in 2014 and applied and received Re-Entry Permit and was out of states for 2 years.

I do NOT have any income to show for the years from 2014 until 2018 now in US or elsewhere.

Do I have to file taxes if there was NO income?

If so, should I file 'zero returns' tax for the years I was out of the country as 'resident alien'?

    Please do advise!

I think it's always best to file ZERO than to not file. It's useful for situations like yours.

When I call HR Block they say NO need to file returns for zero income. They say something like less than $3200 P.A does NOT require returns to be filed as per IRS.

In my case, it is NO INCOME for these period.

      Please advise!

Could you suggest some place to do this? I am in NJ and would appreciate if you could provide contacts of any decent tax consultant/firm, who can do this.

HR Block plain refused the scenario and said NOT required.

Just go on turbo tax online and fill it out. There is a chance you may have to do it by mail, but it can be done. I filed taxes when I was a student and my income was just a few thousand dollars. However, I was applying for citizenship then, and had to show my tax returns. So I did it.
