  • Green Card + Expat Assignment

    Hi!!

My company is sending me on an expat assignment, for 3 years. I received my green card in Dec 2004, about 2 1/2 yrs back. I want to maintain my green card, and the company will help me maintain that with the help of re-entry permit et al.

My question relates to eligibility for citizenship. What will it take for me to keep my current already spent time here in USA count towards the 5 years wait period to apply for the citizenship. I was told that if I have been here for atleast 2 1/2 years, then an application to immigration can be made to count my already spent 2 1/2 years towards my 5 year period. I dont want to start the clock all over again. What can I do? What are my options.

    Thanks,
    Puneet

If you and eligble to file N470, you can do it and this preserves the time spent outside US. But to be eligible you must have in the US for 365 days without a break after getting your GC.

I am in the same boat as yours except that the number of days without a break in my case is 360. Not sure if I qualify for N470?

      Thanks
