Rentry permit question

Hi,

I was out of US for 8 months in year 2006. I entered in Nov 2006 and returned to India in Jan 2007. I wish to enter now .its been close to 6 months. I had not applied Re-entry permit.

I guess one can be out of US for upto 1 year if I am right. I hope it should be ok to enter US now .
