  • Selective Service?

    Dear Immihelp website,

I am contacting you because I have a question about Selective Service. I
became a permanent resident when I was 27 1/2 years old before that I had
a F-1 visa and later a H1-B visa. I checked in your website and also in
the official Selective Service website and it seems to be clear that I
didn't need to register since I was 26 or older when I became a lawful
    immigrant. Is this correct?

I will be applying for US Citizenship in the next few months. Do I need a
letter from the Selective Service or some official document that proofs
why I didn't register? It seems to me that simply by looking at the date I
was born and the date when I became a permanent resident, it would be
clear that I was exempt from registering.

Thanks for any advice you can provide and I look forward to your response.

    Regards,

It does not matter at what age you got GC as far as Selective Services is concerned. If you came in this country before the age of 26 and stayed here, you have to be registered with Selective Services. I came here when I was 20 years of age, a year later, I was out of status. I never had any Idea about Selective Services. This year I got asylum. I enrolled in college and when I applied for financial aid, I had to explain why I did not register with the Selective Services. In their website www.sss.gov clearly states that any male within the age of 18-26 have to register with Selective Services regardless of status. It is not a big deal however. Just get a letter from them and a written explanation from your part.

But once you are past 26 years of age you can no longer register with the SSS. And that alone will cause a great deal of trouble when seeking benefits, such as applying for citizenship.
