  • Green Card Retention

Our family are Canadians that have recently received our Green Cards after a decade of living in the US. My daughter is considering attending a Canadian university.

Given that she will pursue a 4 yr degree it seems that she would forfeit her Green Card given the absolute limit of 2 years living outside of the US.

My question is how is residency determined with respect to a Green Card in that she would travel back to the US every two or three months. Does the clock reset every time she enters the US? How will the USCIS know of her residency status given that her passport will not reflect the times she departs from the US to Canada in that Canadian customs inspect but never stamp her passport when she crosses?

So I wonder what can be done that will ensure that she retains her Green Card and still attend the Canadian University?

Re-entry permit is for a duration of 2 yrs no mattaer how many times you travel back and forth. You can get re-entries as many times as you want. People studying abroad for 5-6 yrs get re-entry permits 3-4 times.

      I hope it helps you.
