Can we apply for a re entry permit?

Hello,
we won the dv2007 green card lottery and moved to the US from Australia in Feb 2007. After living there for 4 months we returned to Australia as we had a 9 month old baby and my wife developed a form of post natal depression and needed family support. We have been back in Australia for 9 months and would like to return to the US, but cannot permanently return for possibly 1 year due to our comitments here.
Can we fly back into the US before the 1 year absents period and apply for a re entry permit and return to Australia without any repercussions.

Please help

If this is possible we will enter the US in the next few months, apply for the re-entry permit and will need to return to Australia as I am currently completing my studies here. We plan to stay outside the US for about 12-18 months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
