Biometrics for Re-entry permit?

According to the new rules, if a GC holder applies for REP, he/she must provide biometrics information before departing the US. This rule is effective from March 5, 2008.

My question is - can one leave the US after filing the application for re-entry permit (I-131) and come back to the US in time to provide the biometrics?

Alos, any idea how long it is taking to get the appointment for biometrics information?

You can not leave until it is approved.

AP is different from REP.

with REP you are allowed to travel and can even request it be delivered abroad to a US consulate

but with new biometrics requirements it is not advisable to leave without getting the iometrics done

You are right. If you apply for REP, you are allowed to leave the US before a decision is made on the application.

But with the new Biometrics requirement, the applicant has to appear for fingerprinting etc.

My personal situation is that I may have to leave for India right after applying for REP. Since the timeline to get the biometrics notice is not known, I was thinking of applying REP and then leave and come back in time to make sure that I appear for fingerprinting etc.

I guess this should be ok? Please let me know what you guys think.
