  • Immigrant Visa on the passport to green card

I have the visa on my passport & I intend to arrive in the States shortly.

Am I correct in assuming that the green card will be mailed to my address in the States after I arrive there? Or is there something I to do while I'm there?

    Thanks

Leaving the country without the collecting the greencard

      That's great.

I'm only there (in the States) for a week. I think the greencard will take atleast 1 month to arrive by mail. My mom will courier it to me later.

      Can I leave without it?

... you do know you need to "live permanently" in the USA right?

I plan to live 1 week at a time, twice a year. Wonder if I'll get into trouble for that.

I knew of a guy who did this for years on end exiting the USA via Canada or something like that. But I believe that loophole has been closed since 911.

          Worried.

            Read this: https://www.immihelp.com/retain-greencard-useful-tips/

You will lose your Green Card. You can not just visit for 2 weeks a year and still be a resident.

That's what I thought but your link says otherwise, in the section "Maintaining Permanent Residence".

It appears that by not "remaining outside the US for more than one year" and filing taxes ("does not necessarily mean that you must actually pay U.S. income taxes"), one could live elsewhere and get away with it.

You can try to trick the system. But my advice is either move to the USA or forfeit the GC. They will catch you... it is a "permanent resident" card... to "permanently reside" in the USA... 2 weeks a years is not living in the USA.

I'm doing a project in the Middle East. I expect the good times here to last for 5 years.

                      Landed immigrant

It took all of 1 minute to process me. I was fingerprinted (only the right hand index finger) and signed a paper. The signature had to be within the box on the paper.
I was expecting them to take a picture, but they did not.

I spoke to some guys that are doing the green card from within the US. They are sent an appointment to take a picture and stuff like that.

I wonder if they will send me such a notification or simply mail the greencard.
