Travel to India - Passport

Hello,

I'm on conditional green card expiring on Feb 2010. My Indian passport is expiring in May 29, 2009.

I'm planning on visiting India from Dec to Jan 7, 2009. Should I renew my passport before my travels. Or Would I be ok with my current passport.

Could you please help.

As a rule, nobody can travel with an exipired passport. You have to renew it.

You can travel fine with your current passport as your trip falls within it's validity.

Sorry, I have seen now your following corrected message. However, meanwhile I also recalled having once learned that the date of expiration of passports shall be at least 6 months from the date of reentry. As the date of your passport's expiration is just around that period of time, in order to be on the save side and avoid surprises, I WOULD SURELY just renew it prior travelling.

passport validity of 6 months rule does not apply when you are traveling to country of paspport, so if you are travelling to India on an Indian passport it does not matter even if you have valid for less than 6 months, because that Indian passport can be renewed in India as well. and let's say you don't renew it India, you can even come back to USA with a valid Indian passport it has to valid for few days atleast along with your valid green card. if you don't have a valid green card, then minimum 6 months validity is required.

As suggested by other members, The best suggestion is to renew your passport before you leave, they will renew your passport for 10 years new passport booklet. This is highly recomended incase you had to stop over in other country for some reason.
