Returning to US after gone for 1+ year

I am a US citizen, husband is a green card holder. We came to Europe so I could do a masters program without doing our proper diligence beforehand, not realizing we were jeopardizing his GC. We left 20 months ago, at month 13 we returned to the states for a visit. This is when we realized we had trouble, the agent at the airport gave him a lot of trouble but ultimately let him in. He stamped his passport as if he had entered normally on an ARC(alien resident card). They handwrote in the passport
