Re-Entry Question-out of U.S. 2 years

Hi,

My In-Laws have a green card that expires in 2015, but have been living in Terceira, Azores, Portugal. They were here 2-years ago exactly, and left in September 08. They never filled out any paper-work for a reentry permit or anything. They aren't aware of any rules/regulations and now I am the one looking into them since they are planning on coming back next month and staying for around 7-8months. I just want to make sure they don't get into any trouble on their visit, which they are scheduled to arrive September 21st.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Most likely, they have already lost their green card status.

What is the next step for them to take if they want to re-gain their status? Any advice, direction?
