  • Travelling with a damaged green card

Hello - I am a green card holder and I will be travelling to India next month. 6 month back my green card got damaged by my nephew and it is in 3 prices now. I submitted a request to replace the green card by submitting the form I-90. USCIS is taking their own sweet time to take actions on my case. I have been calling USCIS to get an appointment for an I-551 stamp but there are no appointments in my local office.

    My questions are -

If I should still travel to Indian with a damaged green card and the I-90 receipt?
Is there anything else I should do to make sure my reentry into the US is smooth?

I would not leave without getting an I-551 stamp. Call them and have them check nearby/different field office to get it. With I-90 receipt/damaged GC, you will be able to get to US.....what the issue may be is getting on the plane. It is at carrier's discretion whether they will accept what you have. It is a bit risky and is out of your control. Other option is to get visa for Canada...fly there and then drive to US (costly option).

If the airline refuses to board you for travel back to the US, you would have to file I-131A with a US consulate to get a transportation letter, which costs $575.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
