re-entry permit validity

Hi,
My parents are are green card holders. They went to India in 2022 May after the re-entry permit fingerprint for staying a little longer . Due to the processing delay it took USCIS a long time to approve it and they finally processed it only in June 2023. The permit is valid till 2025 June. Are they expected to return before 2024 May (total duration of re-entry permit approved) or due to the permit validity can they stay until June 2025(By then they are out for almost three years)?

They should be back before June 2025.
