Working with 1099 after CP

I have received my GC by Consular Processing and my employer is asking to
work with 1099 basis, as a independent contractor. Can I work with him up to six months?

As I understood I suppose to work as a permanent employee and I should be in Company’s payroll system.

It is better you work on W2 basis for them.
